Staff Backend Developer (IoT)

Location: Palo Alto, United States; on-site

Salary: $170,000–$210,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

What you will do

• Architect and implement secure, scalable IoT infrastructure and fleet management systems for connected electric vehicles.
• Improve cloud infrastructure covering API design, database schemas, service interactions, event handling, observability, and deployment workflows.
• Build shared services for API gateways, caches, schema upgrades, and integrations with external services and partner platforms.
• Strengthen platform security and privacy, including user authentication and authorization.
• Design high-availability and geographically redundant systems, while ensuring automated testing, performance monitoring, and safe deployments.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to technical decisions, hiring, engineering practices, and team culture.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building and scaling backend systems, including a complete lifecycle managing remote devices.
• Experience designing, shipping, and operating production systems from scratch.
• Strong AWS experience, including Lambda, ECR/ECS, DynamoDB, S3, and IAM.
• Expertise in REST and GraphQL API design, schema design, and gRPC/JSON-RPC data exchange.
• Experience with event-driven architecture and messaging systems such as Kafka, Redis, SQS/SNS, and pub/sub patterns.
• Experience with OAuth2, OIDC, JWT, SAML, mTLS, MQTT, CoAP, device lifecycle management, and telemetry pipelines.
