Staff Software Engineer - Data Platform

Location: United States — San Mateo, CA; hybrid work in San Mateo

Salary: $184,000–$312,000 base salary per year

What you will do

• Architect, design, and implement cloud-native data platform and analytics SaaS services processing billions of real-time data points.
• Lead development of large-scale distributed systems using Java, Scala, Kafka, Hadoop, Spark, Flink, and Hive.
• Design and build real-time stream processing systems, microservices, and API-driven services.
• Ensure scalability, reliability, fault tolerance, performance, and data security.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship across multiple engineering teams.
• Resolve complex code defects and collaborate cross-functionally on AI, cloud, and data platform adoption.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience focused on data platforms or data engineering.
• Deep expertise in Java and large-scale distributed systems, including consistency, availability, durability, reliability, fault tolerance, and consensus algorithms.
• Experience designing and developing machine learning platforms, microservices, and API-driven systems.
• Advanced knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and performance optimization.
• Experience with Kubernetes, AWS, Docker, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Strong technical communication, mentoring skills, and willingness to learn new technologies.

Nice to have

• BS or MS in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Experience building cloud-based data platforms with the modern Big Data stack.
• Familiarity with ELK, Debezium, SaaS/PaaS development on AWS, GCP, or Azure, and TeamCity CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with multiple programming languages and frameworks.
