TL;DR
Mechanical Engineering Intern (Summer 2027) (Additive Manufacturing): Designing, prototyping, testing, and integrating mechanical components and systems for autonomous metal 3D printing factories with an accent on precision motion systems, tolerance analysis, and thermal and fluid subsystems. Focus on owning cradle-to-grave engineering projects, improving manufacturability and reliability, and integrating mechanical platforms with electrical and software systems.

Location: On-site in Los Angeles, CA; facility located in Hawthorne, CA

Compensation: $30/hour for undergraduate interns, $32.50/hour for master's interns, or $35/hour for PhD interns

What you will do

  • Own a cradle-to-grave project that delivers impact to critical print factory capabilities.
  • Design, build, prototype, and test mechanical components, subassemblies, and systems.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and mechanical feasibility studies.
  • Participate in hands-on builds, subsystem integration, and mechanical system validation.
  • Collaborate with senior, electrical, and software engineers to improve system performance, reliability, manufacturability, and production readiness.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering at an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Hands-on design experience from internships, engineering clubs, or similar projects.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to use a first-principles approach to solve complex engineering problems.

Nice to have

  • Master's or PhD in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • Knowledge of motion control and kinematics.
  • Experience designing fluid or thermal systems and working with electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with metal 3D printing, multidisciplinary collaboration, and rapid iteration.
  • Evidence of academic excellence, leadership, resilience, or achievement against adversity.
