Director, Legal Innovation & Operations (Legal Spend & Firm Management)

Location: Hybrid, with at least four days per week in either the New York, NY or Universal City, CA office.

Salary: $110,000–$140,000 yearly, plus bonus and long-term incentive eligibility.

What you will do

• Own the Legal Department’s operating strategy, roadmap, and execution for financial management, outside counsel, external providers, e-billing, and governance.
• Establish matter-level budgets, accruals, forecasts, reporting standards, variance thresholds, and escalation processes.
• Manage outside counsel guidelines, firm selection, RFPs, onboarding and offboarding, preferred-firm programs, scorecards, reviews, and performance interventions.
• Lead rate negotiations, benchmarking, alternative fee arrangements, e-billing workflows, invoice review, and billing-compliance escalations.
• Lead implementation, migration, optimization, reporting validation, user adoption, and vendor transition for legal e-billing and spend-management platforms.
• Report on spend, savings, cost avoidance, billing compliance, and provider performance; coach and develop direct reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years of experience in Legal Operations, Legal Finance, Outside Counsel Management, Strategic Sourcing, or a related field.
• Experience managing complex budgets, forecasts, accruals, and financial reporting in a large organization.
• Experience with outside counsel guidelines, panel programs, firm selection, evaluations, scorecards, and business reviews.
• Experience owning or leading an e-billing, matter-management, or legal spend-management platform.
• Advanced Excel proficiency and the ability to analyze and present complex financial and operational data.

Nice to have

• Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar business-intelligence and data-visualization tools.
• Experience supporting an organizational transformation, separation, integration, or platform migration.
• Experience in entertainment, media, or a legal department.
