Head of Backend Department (AI) (Backend Engineering and Management): Leading a backend engineering department in an outsourcing and service environment with an accent on resource planning, people development, engineering standards, and service-line growth. Focus on designing scalable distributed systems, integrating AI across the delivery lifecycle, managing department economics, and translating technical capabilities into client-facing offers.

What you will do
- Lead the backend department by setting goals, organizing workflows, monitoring performance, and resolving cross-functional conflicts.
- Manage engineering capacity and resource allocation across projects, including staffing plans, utilization, hiring needs, and escalation of resource conflicts.
- Own hiring, performance reviews, career development, succession planning, and technical competency growth for the department.
- Define and track department OKRs and report results to company leadership.
- Manage department economics, including profitability, salary benchmarking, budgets, training, tooling, and licenses.
- Develop new technical capabilities and market-relevant service offers through presales, client feedback, and collaboration with other company leaders.
Requirements
- 10+ years of backend engineering experience and 5+ years in engineering management or team leadership.
- Management experience in an outsourcing or service company with 200+ employees and 50+ subordinates.
- Strong knowledge of at least one major backend ecosystem, including Node, Python, Java, Go, C#, or PHP, plus HTTP/REST, gRPC, and WebSockets.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, query optimization, indexing, data modeling, scalable high-load microservices, and distributed systems.
- Advanced knowledge of Git/GitFlow, code review, API versioning, clean code, DDD, SOLID, OWASP, and automated testing.
- Presales, project estimation, architectural and client communication experience, plus experience integrating AI across the software delivery lifecycle.
Nice to have
- Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or ELK.
- Conceptual knowledge of React, Angular, or Vue.
