TL;DR
Associate Technical Director (Java/AWS): Leading the technical strategy and architecture of player platform services spanning accounts, payments, subscriptions, web, launcher, and player support with an accent on scalability, resilience, maintainability, and modernization. Focus on guiding multiple engineering teams and senior technical leaders, integrating modern technology with legacy systems, and managing technology across its full lifecycle.
Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom; hybrid working with predominantly remote options, but regular onsite attendance is required as needed. Applicants should be within commuting distance or willing to relocate.

What you will do
- Define technical strategy and translate it into measurable objectives with Lead Engineers.
- Guide the architecture and evolution of systems supporting payments, subscriptions, accounts, identity, web, and the game launcher.
- Establish engineering principles and standards while balancing scalability, resilience, maintainability, cost, technical debt, and delivery.
- Coach and develop Lead Engineers and their teams, improving technical leadership and engineering capability.
- Partner with product and business leaders to explain technical options, risks, and trade-offs.
- Own technology across evaluation, procurement, operation, modernization, and decommissioning, including SaaS budgets and outsourced engineering partners.
Requirements
- Significant experience leading multiple engineering teams delivering and operating complex, business-critical software systems.
- Experience managing and developing senior technical leaders, including performance, succession, workforce planning, and capability growth.
- Strong experience defining technical strategy, engineering standards, and measurable technical objectives.
- Experience evolving complex systems where modern technology operates alongside legacy platforms.
- Expertise in a relevant engineering domain and recent proximity to hands-on engineering, with knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, TypeScript, React, AWS, EKS, Kubernetes, Terraform, event-driven systems, and microservices.
- Experience collaborating with product, business, and technology leaders and managing external engineering partners or suppliers.
