Firmware Engineer (Embedded C)

Location: Durban, South Africa. Applicants must be legally authorized to reside and work in South Africa. International relocation and remote work outside South Africa are not available.

What you will do

• Develop and maintain embedded firmware for real-time and embedded systems.
• Implement product features, enhancements, defect fixes, and firmware update mechanisms.
• Design, test, verify, debug, and troubleshoot firmware across development, manufacturing, and field deployments.
• Port software to new hardware platforms and components.
• Develop and maintain communication protocols and device interfaces.
• Collaborate with hardware, software, quality assurance, and manufacturing teams; contribute to design reviews, code reviews, and technical documentation.

Requirements

• 2+ years of professional experience in embedded software or firmware development.
• Proficiency in C programming for embedded systems.
• Familiarity with microcontrollers, embedded systems, and debugging tools.
• Understanding of software development lifecycles and Git-based version control.
• Basic knowledge of UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, TCP/IP, or similar communication protocols.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with RTOS-based systems or Embedded Linux.
• Python or Bash scripting experience.
• Knowledge of secure software development, networking, continuous integration, and automated testing.
• Experience with JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, or logic analyzers.
• Exposure to access control, IoT, industrial, or security-related products.
