Senior Software Engineer (Mainframe)

M&T Bank is a banking organization hiring an expert-level mainframe software engineer to lead technical delivery for critical applications and platforms.

What you will do

• Lead the technical design, development, enhancement, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and support of mainframe applications across batch and online processing.
• Own technical decisions, delivery quality, solution designs, implementation plans, and production readiness for assigned applications, platforms, and workstreams.
• Drive mainframe modernization through API enablement, data integration, DevOps adoption, technical debt reduction, and incremental refactoring.
• Review designs, pull requests, code changes, testing strategies, deployment readiness, and operational support practices.
• Improve resiliency, defect reduction, monitoring, restart and recovery, batch scheduling, and production stability.
• Collaborate with business, product, architecture, infrastructure, security, operations, risk, and audit stakeholders.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree with at least 5 years of systems analysis or application development experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
• Expert experience with IBM z/OS, COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 for z/OS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, and Easytrieve+.
• Experience with GitLab for source control, change management, and CI/CD pipeline management.
• Experience with mainframe debugging and analysis tools such as File-AID, Abend-AID, Xpediter, or InterTest.
• Experience with batch scheduling and enterprise integration using CA7, Control-M, MQ, or equivalent tools.
• Experience leading technical initiatives as an individual-contributor technical lead, including design reviews, code reviews, testing, deployment, security, resiliency, and change management.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and at least 5 years of systems analysis or application development experience.
• Experience with z/OS Connect, ZDIH, API enablement, event and data integration, mainframe DevOps, automated testing, and AI-assisted engineering.
• Experience improving production stability, engineering productivity, and defect reduction within Agile delivery frameworks.
