Lead Software Engineer - Mainframe

What you will do

• Lead the technical design, development, enhancement, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and production support of mainframe applications across batch and online processing.
• Own technical decisions, delivery quality, operational readiness, production stability, and risk remediation for assigned mainframe platforms and application domains.
• Review and approve solution designs, requirements, code changes, testing approaches, deployment readiness, and change-management activities.
• Develop clean, secure, maintainable, and resilient code while coaching engineers on code reviews, engineering practices, algorithms, and secure development.
• Guide mainframe modernization through API enablement, data integration, DevOps adoption, incremental refactoring, automation, and technical debt reduction.
• Partner with business, product, architecture, infrastructure, security, operations, risk, and audit stakeholders, communicating technical decisions, risks, and blockers.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree with at least 7 years of systems analysis or application development experience, or a bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Expert mainframe software engineering and application development experience.
• Experience with IBM z/OS, COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 for z/OS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, and Easytrieve+.
• Experience with GitLab or similar source control, change-management, and CI/CD tools.
• Experience with mainframe debugging tools, batch scheduling, and enterprise integration tools such as File-AID, Abend-AID, Xpediter, InterTest, CA7, Control-M, or MQ.
• Experience leading technical initiatives or engineering workstreams, reviewing designs and code, and applying SDLC, testing, deployment, resiliency, security, and production-support practices.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
• Experience with z/OS Connect, ZDIH, API enablement, event or data integration, mainframe DevOps, automated testing, and AI-assisted engineering tools.
• Experience with Agile delivery, stakeholder presentations, production stability improvements, and technical modernization initiatives.
