Lead Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Must be based in Chicago, Illinois. Relocation assistance is not available. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $128,470–$208,770 per year

What you will do

• Lead the design and development of enterprise-scale REST APIs and microservices with Java, Spring Boot, and AWS.
• Define API contracts, payload schemas, and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications for API-first solutions.
• Guide secure and scalable integrations using OAuth 2.0, JWT, and enterprise authorization models.
• Translate business requirements into technical designs, user stories, implementation plans, and delivery decisions.
• Lead design reviews, code reviews, engineering standards, automated testing, performance testing, and operational improvements.
• Own the software lifecycle from deployment and monitoring through production support, documentation, and operational runbooks.

Requirements

• Extensive experience developing RESTful APIs and microservices with Java 21+ and Spring Boot.
• Experience designing, deploying, and operating applications in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
• Experience building automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests with tools such as JUnit and Mockito.
• Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging solutions such as Kinesis, SQS, SNS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, or Event Hub.
• Knowledge of relational, NoSQL, caching, search, and vector databases, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Agile development, technical leadership, software architecture, and production troubleshooting.

Nice to have

• Experience with API management platforms such as Apigee.
• Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot or Cursor.
• Experience working in a Scrum environment.
