Manager 3, Software Engineering - Tax Platform

Location: San Diego, California, United States

Base pay: $237,500–$321,500 per year, with potential bonus, equity rewards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Own the multi-year technical vision and roadmap for tax engines, runtime platforms, and Tax Prep APIs.
• Lead architecture reviews and align engineering strategy with product direction and customer outcomes.
• Manage, coach, and develop engineering managers across a combined organization of 30+ engineers.
• Build hiring, succession planning, mentorship, performance calibration, and leadership development systems.
• Drive reliability, performance, testing, resiliency, security, compliance, incident response, and on-call health for tax-critical systems.
• Partner with Product, Design, AI, Support, and Program leaders to resolve cross-team dependencies and scale Agentic AI capabilities.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience and 5+ years of people leadership, including managing managers.
• Experience leading strategy across multiple teams or capability areas on a one- to three-year planning horizon.
• Experience owning technical direction and architecture for complex, distributed systems or platforms at scale.
• Track record of hiring, developing, and retaining engineering managers and senior individual contributors.
• Applied experience driving AI/GenAI adoption across products, platforms, or development processes.
• Experience with operational excellence for business-critical, tier-1 systems and strong cross-functional influence.

Nice to have

• Experience in tax or another regulated, compliance-sensitive industry.
• Experience with agentic AI tooling or infrastructure, including MCP-based systems or agentic coding tools.
• Experience contributing to shared internal platforms, open source, patents, or industry initiatives.
