Collections Specialist I

What you will do

• Manage an assigned portfolio of open or non-performing consumer loan accounts.
• Make primarily outbound calls to customers in the early stages of delinquency and assess repayment prospects.
• Arrange repayment schedules and solutions such as loan workouts, alternative lending, credit counseling, reages, or extensions.
• Document call outcomes and handle inbound questions from customers and internal departments.
• Identify suspected fraud, lack of insurance, and other exposure risks; investigate and escalate issues with recommendations.
• Use collections and accounting systems to maintain accounts, resolve issues, and refer complex cases to a supervisor.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of relevant work experience.
• Experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Detail-oriented approach and ability to follow compliance and operational risk controls.
• Work is performed under direct supervision; the role cannot waive late fees or offer settlements.

Nice to have

• Associate’s degree.
• Previous customer service, customer-facing, collections, call center, or sales experience.
• Knowledge of M&T Bank systems.
