AVP, Associate General Counsel - CLESS (Commercial Insurance)

Salary: $175,000–$326,000 annually; expected starting range $175,000–$291,000

What you will do

• Lead legal support for complex matters across Commercial Lines, Excess & Surplus, Specialty, Small Commercial, Middle Market, Wholesale, Programs, and Shared Services.
• Advise Presidents, SVPs, VPs, AVPs, and other senior leaders on underwriting, products, distribution, claims, portfolios, and strategic business opportunities.
• Provide strategic counsel on commercial insurance operations, regulatory requirements, insurance products, contracts, business transformation, third-party relationships, data, and technology.
• Identify legal risks, evaluate business strategies, and coordinate practical risk-mitigation advice with the Office of the Chief Legal Officer and subject-matter legal partners.
• Serve on the CLESS Legal leadership team and lead high-priority cross-team initiatives supporting underwriting, talent development, and data and technology adoption.
• Manage approximately seven direct and indirect reports, including Managing Counsel, Senior Counsel, Counsel, and Paralegal professionals.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
• Fully licensed and in good standing in the state or states of practice, with all continuing legal education requirements maintained.
• At least 15 years of deep experience in insurance underwriting, commercial insurance, wholesale or distribution, and regulatory matters.
• Extensive understanding of P&C insurance, commercial underwriting, wholesale and distribution models, and legal and regulatory considerations for shared services.
• Strong legal, analytical, written, verbal, decision-making, project leadership, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Ability to coach and support legal professionals while advising management, clients, peers, and business partners.
