Staff Engineer (AI)

Location: New York, New York, United States; in-office 4–5 days per week

Salary: $207,000–$250,000 USD annual base compensation, plus equity

The Farmer’s Dog provides personalized, freshly made dog food through a direct-to-consumer subscription service and is expanding into broader personalized pet-care experiences.

What you will do

• Guide the strategic evolution of core and new systems by establishing boundaries, leading migrations, and enabling resilient architecture.
• Influence product and business strategy by identifying system risks, constraints, and opportunities.
• Align engineering pods and business partners around priorities, architecture, and customer goals.
• Partner with Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers, Product Managers, Designers, and Data teams.
• Evaluate and introduce AI, automation tools, and other technologies through research, prototypes, and written briefs.
• Lead the organization’s technical approach to responsible AI and raise engineering standards through mentoring and coaching.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with expertise designing and evolving systems at scale.
• Experience leading architectural initiatives that improve reliability, maintainability, and extensibility.
• Experience partnering with product teams on business strategy and balancing short- and long-term priorities.
• Ability to work across teams, align people and systems, and drive impact beyond an immediate scope.
• Strong understanding of AI opportunities and risks in software engineering.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, prioritization, and attention to detail; experience mentoring senior engineers.
