Senior Scientist, Biologics Formulation (Biopharmaceutical Formulation)

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, United States. Candidates must be U.S. persons authorized to work in the United States and permitted to access export-controlled technology.

Salary: $140,000–$180,000 per year, plus potential stock options and/or long-term cash awards.

What you will do

• Lead formulation development programs for high-concentration protein therapeutics across dosage forms.
• Design formulation strategies using protein chemistry, physical biochemistry, thermodynamics, solution chemistry, and colloidal science.
• Identify and mitigate aggregation, precipitation, viscosity, and chemical degradation risks, including defining Critical Quality Attributes.
• Lead multiple formulation projects, design experiments, interpret complex datasets, and establish acceptance criteria.
• Evaluate advanced formulation technologies and collaborate with analytical development, engineering, and external partners.
• Mentor junior scientists and maintain rigorous data management, ELN documentation, technical reporting, and publication practices.

Requirements

• PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomaterials, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of biopharmaceutical industry experience in early-stage or late-stage protein formulation development.
• Proven experience leading formulation development projects from concept through execution.
• Deep expertise in protein chemistry, physical biochemistry, formulation science, and high-concentration protein formulations.
• Hands-on experience with protein characterization techniques such as DLS, DSF, SEC, CE, rheology, and spectroscopy.
• U.S. person status and authorization to work in the United States are required for access to export-controlled technology.

Nice to have

• Experience with protein crystallization, lyophilization, spray drying, or other solid-state processing operations.
• Knowledge of advanced formulation systems, Design of Experiments, statistical analysis, high-throughput screening, or automation.
• Background in monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, or other complex biologics.
• Scientific publications, patent applications, or experience in startup and resource-constrained R&D environments.
