Principal Process Engineer (Automation)

Location: Round Lake, Illinois, United States; onsite, full-time role with less than 10% travel

Salary: $112,000–$154,000 annually, plus potential discretionary bonus

What you will do

• Improve manufacturing control systems, equipment reliability, throughput, uptime, and process repeatability.
• Develop and implement automation, data integration, and Industry 4.0 improvements.
• Map process flows and critical control points to support data-driven decision-making.
• Lead or support root-cause analysis, NCR/CAPA investigations, risk reduction, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Manage equipment and process change controls and update SOPs, protocols, and work instructions.
• Provide technical leadership, training, troubleshooting support, and guidance to production teams, cross-functional groups, and vendors.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Mechanical or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
• 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to work in a Penicillin/Cephalosporin facility.
• Must work onsite in Round Lake, Illinois, with less than 10% travel.
• Understanding of regulatory compliance, safety standards, and validation practices.
• Experience with automation systems, motion control, VFDs, pneumatics/hydraulics, mechanical systems, and structured problem-solving methods.

Nice to have

• Experience with Serialization and SCADA.
• Experience applying AI vision, robotics, Six Sigma, DFSS, VOC, FMEA, and failure-mode prevention.
