Staff Software Engineer (Backend) - Billing Platform (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid, working from offices in Palo Alto, California; Dallas, Texas; or Chevy Chase, Maryland, United States

Annual salary: $110,000–$230,000

What you will do

• Oversee high- and low-level designs for subsystems of the billing platform.
• Re-architect the platform to improve scalability, efficiency, quality, reliability, usability, and performance.
• Lead the design and development of complex, scalable, and maintainable software systems.
• Provide technical direction across multiple billing teams and align implementation with the platform's technical vision and business objectives.
• Identify technical risks, prioritize challenges, and develop efficient solutions.
• Collaborate with product management, design, engineering teams, and other stakeholders while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of professional, hands-on software development experience.
• Strong experience architecting and designing large-scale, complex systems.
• Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Golang, or similar languages, with the ability to produce high-performance, production-quality code.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, Kafka, Spark, Airflow, or equivalent technologies.
• Proficiency with cloud computing across the software development lifecycle, including DevOps, observability, telemetry, and test automation.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration, communication, and decision-making skills. Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Financial technology experience focused on billing, payments, subscription management, or financial reporting.
• Experience designing and implementing workflow engines.
