Senior Staff Software Engineer (Backend) - Billing Platform

Location: Hybrid in Palo Alto, CA; Dallas, TX; or Bethesda, MD, United States

Annual salary: $110,000–$260,000

What you will do

• Oversee high- and low-level designs for billing platform subsystems, ensuring quality, reliability, usability, performance, and scalability.
• Lead the re-architecture and development of core billing systems, including invoicing, commissions, collections, payment processing, CRM integration, subscriptions, credit control, dunning, reporting, and analytics.
• Provide technical vision and strategic guidance across multiple billing engineering teams.
• Identify technical risks and design efficient solutions for complex system challenges.
• Collaborate with product management, design, engineering, and other stakeholders to deliver platform capabilities.
• Mentor engineers and promote continuous technical learning and improvement.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional hands-on software development experience.
• Strong experience architecting and designing large-scale, complex systems.
• Production coding expertise in Java, Kotlin, Golang, or similar languages.
• Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, Kafka, Spark, Airflow, or equivalent technologies.
• Expertise with cloud computing, DevOps, observability, telemetry, and test automation.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience.

Nice to have

• Financial technology experience focused on billing, payments, subscription management, or financial reporting.
• Experience designing and implementing workflow engines.
