Principal Software Engineer - Backend

Salary: $139,000–$249,260 annually base salary for U.S.-based roles; offers may exceed this range.

What you will do

• Provide principal-level technical leadership across backend and platform teams, shaping architecture and technical strategy.
• Design, build, and evolve scalable backend systems, APIs, and distributed event-driven services.
• Address consistency, ordering, failure handling, replay, idempotency, rate limiting, and backpressure.
• Establish service and API standards covering schema design, versioning, compatibility, and consumer experience.
• Drive observability, alerting, incident response, production readiness, testing, CI/CD, and systemic remediation.
• Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders while partnering with product, data, and platform leaders on complex solutions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with substantial backend and distributed systems expertise.
• Experience building and operating production backend services and APIs at scale.
• Strong knowledge of asynchronous processing, messaging, eventual consistency, and fault tolerance.
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud-native architectures, including compute, storage, messaging, IAM, observability, and scaling.
• Expertise in system design, data modeling, API design, automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and cross-team technical influence.

Nice to have

• Experience with enterprise platform services, data engineering ecosystems, streaming pipelines, or Snowflake.
• Experience with Kafka, Kinesis, or equivalent event-streaming and messaging platforms.
• Background in master data management, identity resolution, data enrichment, or data quality.
• Experience integrating backend services with analytics, search, indexing, or ML/AI platforms.
• Experience working in large organizations spanning multiple teams, regions, and business units.
