Manager, Software Engineering

Location: Herndon, Virginia, United States; in-office position

Salary: $135,000–$165,000 base salary per year

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, hire, and manage software developers, including training and performance management.
• Oversee the full software development lifecycle from planning through deployment.
• Provide technical direction in architecture, design, implementation, testing, and deployment discussions.
• Collaborate with product management, quality assurance, department heads, end-users, and other stakeholders to define requirements and deliver software solutions.
• Manage multiple projects, remove blockers, and communicate progress, risks, and challenges.
• Improve development workflows and automate manual processes to increase efficiency and quality.

Requirements

• 10+ years of hands-on software development experience across multiple languages and frameworks.
• At least 2 years of experience leading, mentoring, and guiding software developers.
• At least 5 years of collaboration with department heads and end-users to identify requirements and produce specifications.
• Deep knowledge of relational databases, advanced SQL queries, and data modeling.
• Ability to balance team leadership with hands-on technical problem-solving and system design.
• Strong communication, troubleshooting, time management, organizational, customer service, and technical documentation skills.

Nice to have

• 2+ years of PHP and Laravel experience.
• Experience evaluating new technologies, methodologies, tools, and frameworks.
