TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Electric Motors): Designing and developing high-performance electric motors for UAV propulsion and other autonomous delivery equipment with an accent on rotor and stator structures, bearing systems, wiring, sensors, and environmental protection. Focus on owning motors from concept through production, performing structural and thermal FEA, and building prototypes and test hardware for rapid iteration.

Location: San Francisco, California, United States. On-site at least 3 days per week, with availability to work on-site 5 days per week and occasional supplier travel.

Salary: $109,500–$161,000, $134,000–$197,000, or $161,800–$238,000 USD annually, plus potential equity grants.

What you will do

  • Design and develop high-performance electric motors for UAV propulsion and other autonomous delivery hardware.
  • Design mass- and volume-optimized rotor and stator structures, bearing systems, wiring, connectors, and motor sensors.
  • Perform structural and thermal finite element analysis to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Own motor development from concept through production while collaborating with electrical, systems, structural, aerodynamics, reliability, test, industrial design, and manufacturing partners.
  • Build prototypes, fixtures, and test hardware using CNC tools, machine-shop equipment, welding tools, and 3D printers.
  • Design hardware for outdoor commercial operation, including ingress protection and harsh-environment survival.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Experience with dynamic mechanical systems such as motors, actuators, or mechanisms.
  • Strong 3D CAD modeling skills for complex parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to independently perform basic structural and thermal simulation.
  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, metal fabrication, 3D printing, assembly, and test-fixture design.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical integration, wiring practices, manufacturability, assembly methods, and hardware for outdoor or harsh environments.

Nice to have

  • Experience with electric motor manufacturing processes and equipment.
