Associate Software Engineer - Java (Distributed Systems and Databases)

Location: Remote role associated with Portland, Oregon, USA

Salary: $98,000–$123,000 USD base pay per year, plus eligibility for a corporate bonus plan.

What you will do

• Develop Java features for the NRDB telemetry database and optimize performance and efficiency.
• Implement scalable solutions for high-throughput distributed systems.
• Improve service reliability and investigate opportunities to prevent system failures.
• Participate in pager rotation and occasional on-call support for production incidents.
• Collaborate with a distributed engineering group across North America and Europe.

Requirements

• 2+ years of professional experience developing distributed SaaS software.
• Proficiency in Java, algorithms, data structures, and high-throughput software development.
• Understanding of distributed systems and their core challenges.
• Experience using the command line to investigate and resolve technical issues.
• Experience with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis, or MongoDB.
• Familiarity with public cloud platforms, Kubernetes, or Docker, plus strong computer science fundamentals.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of networking and load balancing for low-latency, high-throughput systems.
• Familiarity with observability and alerting patterns.
• Experience debugging Java applications with tools such as Java Flight Recorder.
• Experience working in distributed teams and asynchronously.
