Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Hybrid in Columbia, Maryland, United States; attendance at the Columbia office is required an average of 1–2 days per week.

Salary: $137,510–$195,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Build and maintain Java-based software and Kubernetes deployments using tools such as Helm and Flux.
• Design enterprise APIs and RESTful web services within a microservices architecture.
• Work with engineers to deliver client-focused software solutions and maintain high testing and troubleshooting standards.
• Transition between hands-on execution, mentorship, and team leadership in a senior-level role.
• Keep current with emerging software development trends and technologies.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required. A current U.S. Government Security Clearance is desired but not required; candidates with Secret or TS clearance may be considered.
• 9 years of software engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree in a related field; or 7 years of relevant experience with a master’s degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent with 13 years of relevant experience.
• Strong Java development experience, including modern Java frameworks and libraries such as Spring and Guava.
• Experience building and maintaining Kubernetes deployments using tools such as Helm and Flux.
• Experience designing enterprise APIs, developing RESTful web services, and working with microservices architecture.
• Experience with the agile software lifecycle and Linux.
• Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven.
• Proven experience serving as a tech lead, mentor, or manager for engineering teams.
• Ability to learn quickly, work independently and collaboratively, troubleshoot effectively, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to schedule changes; must be able to work in a hybrid environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
• Experience designing custom Kubernetes tooling, including operators and custom CRDs.
• Experience with Go or Python.
• Experience writing CI/CD automation, such as GitLab CI pipelines.
• Experience with distributed or NoSQL databases and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Scripting experience and familiarity with the Big Data Platform.
• Understanding of agile methodologies and tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise.
