Associate Counsel

Location: Remote, based in San Diego, California; work may involve travel to trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.

Annual salary: $112,750–$186,550.

What you will do

• Defend lawsuits filed in California courts and handle other first-party insurance defense matters.
• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
• Provide opinions to the Claims Department on liability, damages, and claim value.
• Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, examinations under oath, trials, and dispositive hearings.
• Travel as required for litigation proceedings, meetings, and conferences.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree required.
• Admission to the California Bar and an active license in good standing required.
• 2–6+ years of related litigation experience in insurance defense, personal injury, or a related field required.
• Ability to meet and maintain California licensing and applicable continuing legal education requirements.
• Strong written communication, organization, prioritization, multitasking, conflict resolution, and ability to apply complex technical and procedural information.

Nice to have

• Civil litigation experience.
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience.
• Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence or email.
