Staff Counsel (Insurance Defense)

Location: Los Angeles, California; hybrid work with two days in the office each week.

Salary: $148,000–$215,000 per year, plus performance-based bonus.

What you will do

• Establish and operate the California Staff Counsel office, including hiring staff and developing processes, procedures, and technology.
• Represent hirify.global policyholders in liability cases throughout California state and federal courts.
• Manage all phases of litigation, including investigation, pleadings, discovery, depositions, hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, and appeals.
• Develop legal strategies and provide opinions on liability, damages, and case value in coordination with Legal and Claims teams.
• Train and support lawyers and staff, oversee file quality, and manage performance and personnel processes.
• Improve reporting, case management, e-discovery, automation, and workflow efficiency while aligning litigation outcomes with business priorities.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California is required.
• 7–10 years of experience in California insurance defense or personal injury litigation.
• Strong knowledge of California law and civil procedure, particularly personal injury and general liability matters.
• Excellent legal research, writing, negotiation, analytical, and communication skills.
• Expertise with legal case management software, e-discovery tools, and litigation technology.

Nice to have

• At least three years of management experience.
• Admission to additional state bars.
• Experience building a law practice or improving legal operations.
