Manager, Underwriting - Life (Life Insurance)

Location: Fully remote within the lower 48 U.S. states. The role is listed in Ohio and requires no employer-sponsored work authorization.

Salary: $108,000–$200,000 national range; expected starting range of $108,000–$162,000 annually.

What you will do

• Lead day-to-day operations for a Life Underwriting team of 10–12 underwriters.
• Oversee mortality and morbidity risk assessments for universal life, term, long-term care, and variable universal life products.
• Manage decisions involving medical history, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest, and other underwriting information.
• Develop talent through hiring, coaching, feedback, performance management, and succession planning.
• Maintain high-touch relationships with sales partners, firms, producers, customers, and internal departments.
• Lead regulatory implementation, audits, operational improvements, budgeting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

• Ten years of life underwriting experience.
• Five years of leadership experience in a formal or informal capacity.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
• Strong knowledge of life underwriting principles, medical and non-medical risks, financial underwriting, contract law, and underwriting systems.
• Ability to interpret attending physicians’ reports, medical examinations, medical test results, and underwriting outcomes.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States; employer-sponsored work authorization is not available.

Nice to have

• EKG certification.
• FLMI, FALU, CLU, or AALU designation or related professional studies.
• Experience leading underwriting teams in complex environments and managing varied levels of underwriting talent.
