Paint Automation Engineer (Automotive)

Location: Onsite in Kansas City, Kansas, United States; full-time presence in the paint department and on the plant floor required. Shift rotation, weekend, shutdown, and extended-hours support may be required. Travel to suppliers or other GM locations may be needed. Relocation benefits may be available.

What you will do

• Provide engineering support for paint shop automation, including PLCs, HMIs, robots, drives, sensors, industrial networks, process monitoring, and equipment interfaces.
• Troubleshoot automation faults, controls issues, communication problems, equipment alarms, and recurring production interruptions.
• Design, program, integrate, install, commission, validate, and launch new or modified paint equipment and systems.
• Maintain automation requirements, electrical drawings, control-panel documentation, software backups, network documentation, equipment standards, and change records.
• Coordinate with suppliers, contractors, maintenance, skilled trades, quality, safety, IT, and manufacturing engineering on equipment development, testing, installation, and acceptance.
• Improve equipment availability, throughput, quality, process stability, energy performance, material utilization, preventive maintenance, and plant-floor production data systems.

Requirements

• Experience supporting industrial automation or controls in a manufacturing environment.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, control-panel drawings, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex automation and equipment problems using data and structured problem-solving methods.
• Strong communication, organization, project-management, collaboration, autonomy, and accountability skills.
• This is an onsite role requiring full-time presence at the specified Kansas location.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, controls, automation, computer, mechanical, manufacturing, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Experience with Rockwell Automation or Siemens controls, industrial Ethernet, device networks, motion control, variable-frequency drives, and Fanuc or other industrial robots.
• Experience in automotive manufacturing, paint process controls, conveyor controls, material dispensing, environmental systems, paint quality inspection, or manufacturing execution systems.
• Experience with equipment commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or production launches.
