TL;DR
Paint Process Engineer (Automotive): Developing and sustaining paint shop manufacturing processes, equipment, and standardized work with an accent on production quality, throughput, equipment uptime, and environmental objectives. Focus on launching products, commissioning equipment, troubleshooting paint defects and process variation, and implementing structured corrective actions on the plant floor.

Location: Onsite in Kansas City, Kansas, United States; full-time presence in the paint department and plant floor required. Shift rotation and weekend, shutdown, or extended-hours support may be required.

What you will do

  • Develop, implement, and maintain paint shop processes, equipment, layouts, and standardized work.
  • Support product launches, process changes, equipment installation, commissioning, and production ramp-up.
  • Monitor and improve first-time quality, throughput, equipment uptime, material usage, and scrap.
  • Troubleshoot paint defects, process variation, equipment issues, and production interruptions using process data and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Maintain process control plans, failure-mode analyses, reaction plans, engineering documentation, and change records.
  • Coordinate with production, maintenance, quality, environmental, safety, suppliers, vendors, contractors, and engineering leadership.

Requirements

  • Experience in manufacturing, process engineering, or a related field; automotive paint shop experience is preferred.
  • Analytical, troubleshooting, project-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, process documentation, and equipment specifications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
  • Commitment to safe work practices, continuous improvement, waste reduction, and environmental compliance.

Nice to have

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, manufacturing, industrial, paint, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of automotive paint processes, materials, equipment, quality requirements, and paint application systems.
  • Experience with paint shop launches, process controls, equipment commissioning, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, robotics, automation, or manufacturing data systems.
  • Experience coordinating suppliers, contractors, or capital projects and managing production, skilled trades, or UAW employees.
