Senior Applied Research Scientist (AI/ML)

Location: Bethesda, Maryland; candidates must be open to working in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Palo Alto, California, or New York City, New York.

Annual salary: $115,000–$230,000.

What you will do

• Lead the design and delivery of machine learning and GenAI solutions for complex, ambiguous, cross-functional problems.
• Define success metrics, validation plans, and pathways for bringing models into production and driving adoption.
• Partner with product, engineering, and domain experts to create technical roadmaps and align milestones with business outcomes.
• Design online experiments and quasi-experimental analyses, while instrumenting and monitoring business KPIs.
• Set technical direction, make architecture and modeling decisions, and communicate trade-offs and results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Mentor junior scientists and engineers and promote rigorous, reproducible development practices.

Requirements

• Master’s or PhD in computer science, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 3 years of experience developing, deploying, and operating AI/ML models in production.
• Strong proficiency in Python, data processing, SQL, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn.
• Experience designing online experiments, conducting causal analyses, and defining, instrumenting, and monitoring business KPIs.
• Experience leading end-to-end AI/ML initiatives and collaborating with product and engineering teams.
• Must be open to the listed United States work locations.

Nice to have

• Experience designing and optimizing prompts and templates for LLMs.
• Experience with GenAI quality management, including evaluators, red-teaming, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop systems.
• Familiarity with insurance operations and model governance in regulated environments.
