Consultant, Program Underwriting - E&S/Specialty (Workers Compensation)

Location: Remote within any of the lower 48 U.S. states; listed office location: Des Moines, Iowa. Local and overnight travel for client meetings may be required.

Salary: $120,000–$180,000 expected starting annual range; national range $120,000–$224,000.

What you will do

• Underwrite complex workers compensation programs, large accounts, individual risks, and referrals from submission through pricing and terms decisions.
• Analyze exposures, losses, financial information, jurisdictional requirements, and alternative risk structures to recommend appropriate premiums, deductibles, endorsements, and exclusions.
• Monitor portfolio loss ratio, growth, retention, and business mix, identifying trends and recommending corrective actions.
• Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, product endorsements, procedures, and program-specific tools.
• Collaborate with actuarial, claims, finance, compliance, legal, operations, risk control, and reinsurance partners on program development and risk management.
• Manage relationships with program administrators, MGUs, MGAs, reinsurers, brokers, and business partners while training and mentoring less experienced staff.

Requirements

• Must be eligible to work within the lower 48 U.S. states.
• At least 7 years of workers compensation experience in underwriting or a related discipline, preferably with program, large-risk, or high-hazard workers compensation.
• Experience underwriting complex, multi-state risks and using data, models, financial information, and actuarial input to support decisions.
• Strong knowledge of workers compensation coverages, rating plans, insurance regulations, and state-specific requirements.
• Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, project management, and process management skills.
• Undergraduate study in finance, accounting, economics, or risk management is expected; a graduate degree is preferred.

Nice to have

• AU, ARM, or CPCU designation, completed or in progress.
• Program leadership experience in professional or specialty lines.
• Experience with data management, imaging, underwriting software, or related procedures.
