TL;DR
Consultant, Program Underwriting - E&S/Specialty (Workers Compensation) (Workers Compensation Insurance): Underwriting complex workers compensation programs and large-account referrals, evaluating exposures, losses, pricing, coverage, and risk structures with an accent on multi-state risks, portfolio profitability, and regulatory requirements. Focus on analyzing jurisdictional risk, developing underwriting guidelines and program tools, coordinating with actuarial, claims, finance, compliance, and reinsurers, and guiding program partners and underwriting staff.

Location: Remote within any of the lower 48 U.S. states; listed office location: Des Moines, Iowa. Travel locally and overnight for client meetings may be required.

Salary: $120,000–$224,000 annually; expected starting range: $120,000–$180,000.

What you will do

  • Underwrite complex workers compensation program and large-account referrals, including exposures, losses, pricing, coverage, terms, and conditions.
  • Evaluate multi-state and high-hazard risks, including challenging jurisdictions such as California, New York, and Florida.
  • Monitor portfolio loss ratio, growth, retention, and business mix; identify trends and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, rates, forms, endorsements, procedures, and program-specific tools.
  • Coordinate with Finance, Actuarial, Claims, Risk Control, Operations, Compliance, Legal, Accounting, Marketing, and reinsurers.
  • Maintain program-manager relationships, support new program implementation, and provide training and guidance to less experienced staff.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of workers compensation experience in underwriting or a similar function, preferably in programs, large risks, or high-hazard workers compensation.
  • Experience underwriting complex, multi-state risks and using data, models, and financial information to support decisions.
  • Strong knowledge of workers compensation coverages, rating plans, state-specific requirements, insurance regulations, and underwriting practices.
  • Strong financial analysis, mathematical, statistical, logical reasoning, project management, and process management skills.
  • Confident written and verbal communication, negotiation, relationship-building, leadership, training, and mentoring skills.
  • Must already have U.S. work authorization; employer-sponsored work authorization and STEM OPT Extension sponsorship are not available.

Nice to have

  • AU, ARM, or CPCU designation, completed or in progress.
  • Graduate degree in finance, accounting, economics, or risk management.
  • Program leadership experience in professional or specialty lines.
