Staff Software Engineer (InstallShield)

Location: Remote in the United States, with up to 10% travel as needed. Not currently hiring individuals residing in Delaware, Hawaii, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Puerto Rico, and other US territories.

Salary: $150,000–$165,000 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus.

What you will do

• Lead the design, reliability, and modernization of InstallShield projects, custom actions, and installer infrastructure for Dentrix desktop applications.
• Develop versioning, rollback, silent installation contracts, and upgrade strategies to improve software deployment and installation experiences.
• Troubleshoot complex installation and runtime issues across supported Windows environments.
• Contribute to clinical application components in C, C++, and C#, focusing on maintainability and performance.
• Collaborate with product management, engineering, DevOps, QA, and support on iterative technical design and delivery.
• Mentor engineers and establish practices for packaging, deployment, automated installation testing, legacy modernization, and responsible AI-assisted development.

Requirements

• 8+ years building Windows desktop and backend enterprise applications with C#/.NET and C++.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with package management tools, preferably InstallShield.
• In-depth knowledge of Windows, Windows Installer (MSI), registry operations, and file system operations.
• Experience with object-oriented design, SOLID, clean and layered architecture, MVVM, dependency injection, and unit testing.
• Experience working across native and managed code, including C++/CLI or P/Invoke interoperability between C++ and C#.
• Strong debugging, technical decision-making, communication, and cross-functional leadership skills in an Agile Scrum environment.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Team or technical leadership experience and experience modernizing legacy Win32 or MFC applications.
• Experience with WiX, Chocolatey, Scoop, Winget, CI/CD, build automation, digital signing, privilege handling, or silent installations.
• Experience with dental, healthcare, or regulated healthcare data, including familiarity with Faircom databases.
• Experience instrumenting analytics and familiarity with clean architecture patterns.
