TL;DR
Senior Process Engineer (Advanced R&D) (Metal 3D Printing): Developing and optimizing novel processes for advanced metal additive manufacturing systems through large-scale in-situ data analysis, experiments, and post-build material characterization with an accent on multi-physics process understanding, metrology, and quality metrics. Focus on designing experiments, qualifying tools, applying machine learning to process improvement, and enhancing system performance, reliability, and scalability.

Location: Los Angeles, CA; full-time onsite presence in Hawthorne five days a week

Salary: $140,000–$200,000 per year, plus stock options

What you will do

  • Analyze large in-situ data sets to understand the physical mechanisms of metal additive manufacturing.
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze results, and develop and optimize processes on metal additive systems.
  • Perform post-build metrology and analyze tensile strength, surface roughness, and alloy microstructure.
  • Track quality metrics for customer parts, including dimensional accuracy, defect distribution, and surface roughness.
  • Develop tool qualification procedures and continuous improvement plans for system performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, and simulations engineers to improve printing processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or a similar engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of process development experience in complex physics-based applications such as semiconductor, solar, or additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with Design of Experiments, statistical data analysis, and process optimization.
  • Experience gathering and processing large data sets.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time in Hawthorne, California, five days per week, with very limited exceptions.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in materials science, physics, or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience in semiconductor, solar, display, or other cutting-edge industries.
  • Experience with machine learning, data science, statistical process control, or tool health monitoring.
  • Experience with R, JMP, Python, Minitab, or MATLAB.
  • Experience operating complex equipment and preparing metallurgical samples for optical microscopy.
