TL;DR
Senior Materials Engineer (Metal 3D Printing) (Metallurgy/Additive Manufacturing): Establishing materials testing infrastructure, quality metrics, and process improvements for AI-native metal additive manufacturing systems with an accent on metallurgical characterization, printed-part quality, and data-driven analysis. Focus on operating advanced materials equipment, automating measurement procedures, interpreting large datasets, and connecting materials findings to upstream printing processes and machine learning models.

Location: Hawthorne, Los Angeles, CA, United States; full-time onsite presence five days per week required

Salary: $125,000–$200,000 per year, plus stock options

What you will do

  • Establish materials and process infrastructure, testing best practices, and quality measurement strategy.
  • Operate equipment to measure tensile strength, surface roughness, microstructure, and other material properties.
  • Generate, track, analyze, and present quality metrics for printed customer parts, including dimensional accuracy and defect distribution.
  • Connect materials findings to upstream printing process improvements and machine learning model training.
  • Optimize metallurgical measurement procedures and create automation to reduce manual work.
  • Develop continuous improvement plans that increase system performance, reliability, and scalability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science, materials engineering, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering.
  • 7+ years of professional materials engineering experience, including at least three years working with metals.
  • Experience developing and optimizing metallurgical sample preparation techniques, including cutting, grinding, polishing, acid etching, and optical microscopy.
  • Ability to work onsite in Hawthorne five days per week, with very limited exceptions.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or PhD in materials science, materials engineering, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering.
  • 10+ years of materials engineering experience.
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing, laser powder bed fusion, or process development.
  • Experience operating complex materials equipment.
  • Experience with large datasets and statistical analysis software such as R, JMP, or Minitab.
