Principal Engineer - Software Systems

Location: Westminster, Colorado, United States. U.S. Person status is required: U.S. citizen, permanent resident, Asylee, or Refugee.

Salary: $150,000–$200,000–$220,000 annually for positions based in Colorado. The role is also incentive eligible.

What you will do

• Lead the technical design and delivery of complex, cross-domain software systems.
• Define system architecture, integration strategies, interfaces, boundaries, and technical direction across multiple engineering teams.
• Translate ambiguous customer, mission, and business problems into scalable technical solutions.
• Lead architecture reviews, trade studies, dependency management, integration planning, validation, and operational readiness.
• Identify and mitigate architectural, integration, operational, and delivery risks.
• Influence engineering organizations through technical judgment, mentor senior technical leaders, and partner with product, architecture, operations, customers, and executives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• Significant experience architecting and delivering large-scale, software-intensive systems.
• Deep understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, cloud-native architectures, data flows, scalability, resiliency, observability, security, and operations.
• Experience leading major cross-functional or cross-domain initiatives, architecture reviews, technical trade studies, and consequential design decisions.
• Experience defining system boundaries, interfaces, integration strategies, validation approaches, deployment processes, and operational readiness.
• U.S. Person status is required due to export control and ITAR requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, distributed data systems, or event-driven architectures.
• Experience with AI-assisted software development and agentic engineering workflows.
• Background in high-availability, mission-critical, geospatial, aerospace, defense, robotics, autonomous, or other complex mission domains.
• Experience with systems-of-systems integration, developer platforms, platform engineering, or internal engineering infrastructure.
• Experience with sovereign, on-premises, disconnected, hybrid, model-based, or digitally enabled systems engineering environments.
