TL;DR
Additive Manufacturing Development Engineer (Metal 3D Printing): Developing advanced metal 3D printing production systems and taking customer designs from concept through print preparation, manufacturing, testing, and delivery with an accent on DFAM, machine functionality, and part quality analysis. Focus on analyzing in-situ and post-print data, defining first-principles test methods, improving automated high-volume production, and coordinating mechanical, electrical, software, and customer requirements.

Location: On-site in Hawthorne, Los Angeles, CA, five days a week, with very limited exceptions

Salary: $90,000–$140,000 per year, depending on academic level and demonstrated experience.

What you will do

  • Understand printing system capabilities and roadmap, collaborating with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to automate high-volume production.
  • Lead print production development from DFAM feedback and file preparation through printing, post-processing, and quality control.
  • Analyze in-situ data and post-print part quality to drive continuous process and system improvement.
  • Define test methods, evaluate solutions, iterate on designs, and provide technical recommendations using first-principles thinking.
  • Document application requirements, statements of work, operating procedures, action items, and next steps.
  • Work with external customers on technical capabilities and Design for Additive Manufacturing improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college.
  • Hands-on design experience through internships, engineering clubs, or similar practical projects.
  • Full life-cycle hardware design experience covering calculations, CAD, fabrication, and testing.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and the ability to solve problems from first principles.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site in Hawthorne, California.

Nice to have

  • Experience with metal 3D printing, DMLS, LPBF, or metal additive manufacturing process development.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering and a strong academic record.
  • Matlab or similar scripting experience for toolpath generation.
  • Mechanical systems design and internal or external customer experience.
  • Strong verbal, graphical, and technical communication skills.
