Staff Software Engineer - Experiments Platform (AU remote)

Location: Remote within Australia; flexible work from home, Canva workspaces, or a mix of both.

What you will do

• Provide senior technical leadership for the backend systems supporting Canva's experimentation program.
• Evolve platforms for configuring experiments, targeting users, exposing variants, and measuring outcomes.
• Improve experimentation safety by surfacing signals quickly and alerting teams when guardrails are affected.
• Take ownership of significant technical problems and shape the platform's technical direction with senior leaders.
• Collaborate with software engineers, data scientists, product teams, and other technical leaders to drive platform adoption.
• Explore AI-assisted automation of experimentation analysis to help teams learn and iterate faster.

Requirements

• Experience building backend systems or platforms used by other engineers.
• Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, feature management, or progressive rollout systems in a large engineering environment.
• Ability to form technical direction for ambiguous engineering problems and help other engineers deliver outcomes.
• Strong fundamentals in backend and distributed systems, including scalability, availability, consistency, and failure modes.
• Familiarity with data engineering, analytics engineering, or large-scale data processing.
• Understanding of experiment assignment, targeting, variants, feature flags, metrics, guardrails, and progressive rollout.

Nice to have

• Experience designing or building experimentation, A/B testing, feature-management, or rollout infrastructure.
• Background spanning software engineering and data science, data engineering, or analytics engineering.
• Experience with feature flagging, user targeting, progressive rollout, or automated guardrail systems.
• Comfort working with experimentation and statistics alongside data scientists.
• Java experience; Java is the primary language but is not required.
