Staff Engineer, Checkout Platform (m/f/d)

Location: Berlin, Germany; remote work possible. Work-from-home arrangements can include up to 20 days per year anywhere in the EU.

What you will do

• Build and evolve scalable, channel-independent Core Commerce Services and headless checkout capabilities from technical discovery through production.
• Define APIs, domain boundaries, integration patterns, and technical foundations for scalability, reliability, security, observability, and maintainability.
• Align technical decisions and integration contracts across Checkout, Payment, and dependent engineering teams.
• Contribute hands-on to production code while providing architectural and technical leadership.
• Mentor engineers through pairing, design discussions, code reviews, and technical feedback.
• Partner with Product to establish foundations for AI-powered assistants, agentic commerce, and emerging channels.

Requirements

• Strong Java and backend engineering expertise, including backend services, platforms, and large-scale distributed systems.
• Staff/Principal-level experience or equivalent senior technical leadership, with strong system design and architecture capabilities.
• Ability to take significant technical ownership and work autonomously in a greenfield, 0-to-1 environment.
• Experience shaping architecture, APIs, domain boundaries, evaluating trade-offs, and making pragmatic technical decisions.
• Strong record of mentoring engineers and leading through influence across engineering domains.

Nice to have

• Experience with headless or traditional checkout, order management, SaaS or platform engineering, e-commerce, or marketplaces.
