Staff Platform Engineer (AI)

Location: Palo Alto, California, United States; hybrid

Salary: $121,600–$228,000 per year, depending on US geographic pay tier, skills, experience, education, and location.

What you will do

• Build and operate infrastructure, tooling, and pipelines for a medical-device product spanning embedded Linux devices and cloud services.
• Own the build, signing, rollout, rollback, configuration, recovery, and operational tooling for the in-field Linux kiosk fleet.
• Design CI/CD, test-gated promotion, controlled approvals, release traceability, and reversible deployment systems for cloud and device software.
• Establish observability, alerting, reliability, backup and recovery, auditability, security controls, and developer self-service tooling.
• Operate secure and reproducible AWS and Terraform infrastructure, including support for scalable data-science environments and model serving.
• Translate Product, Clinical, Regulatory, and InfoSec needs into platform capabilities supporting clinical studies and regulatory submissions.

Requirements

• 8+ years of platform, DevOps, or infrastructure engineering experience with AWS and production CI/CD and release systems for complex distributed systems.
• Strong software-engineering skills in Python or Go, with experience building and maintaining production-grade tooling and services.
• Experience operating Linux-based systems and networked or IoT device fleets, including OTA update strategies.
• Deep expertise in Terraform or Terragrunt, Docker, and ECS/Fargate or Kubernetes.
• Experience with observability and production monitoring using tools such as Datadog or CloudWatch.
• Experience delivering software in regulated, safety-critical, high-assurance, or sensitive-data environments is strongly preferred; medical-device experience is especially relevant.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with Mender or comparable embedded-Linux update systems, signed images, and A/B updates.
• Experience with Software as a Medical Device, FDA 510(k) or De Novo pathways, and IEC 62304.
• Knowledge of HIPAA/GDPR compliance, audit logging, PKI, device authentication, threat modeling, and secure data transmission.
• Experience with MLOps, data versioning, model serving, Tailscale or WireGuard, multi-cloud infrastructure, or diagnostic and imaging devices.
