Senior Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Toronto, Canada; remote work is indicated for the role.

Estimated base pay: $151,000–$189,000 CAD per year, plus eligibility for a corporate bonus plan.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and deploy Java/Kotlin backend services for high-volume telemetry and alerting workloads.
• Build alerting features across the data pipeline while reducing technical debt and retiring legacy architecture.
• Collaborate with product managers and engineers working on streaming systems, infrastructure, UIs, and customer-facing APIs.
• Advocate for architecture improvements, assess trade-offs, and define future technical direction.
• Deliver reliable, secure, clean, well-tested, and maintainable code through frequent production releases and peer reviews.
• Contribute to internal documentation and cross-team code changes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, preferably in a SaaS or product-based environment.
• Strong Java proficiency and willingness to work with Kotlin; solid knowledge of object-oriented programming, RESTful APIs, and multithreaded programming.
• Experience building and operating reliable, high-throughput Java services in production.
• Experience with relational databases, complex SQL, optimization, pagination, partitioning, and scaling.
• Experience with distributed systems, scalable queries, and APIs used by internal or external customers.
• Agile experience and strong interpersonal skills, including consensus-building, leadership by example, persistence, and tenacity.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with LLMs, AI agents, LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented workflows, model evaluation, or MCP servers.
• Familiarity with Kafka, Flink, Spark Streaming, RabbitMQ, AMQP, or gRPC.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Frontend awareness involving React, TypeScript, GraphQL, or CSS.
