Civil Engineer (Hybrid Schedule)

Location: Berlin, Connecticut, United States. Hybrid schedule requiring at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays; the role may require up to five days in the office when operationally necessary. Travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire and site visits to substations are required.

Annual salary: $100,490–$111,660, plus potential incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Design and analyze substation civil infrastructure, including structural steel, foundations, rigid bus systems, grading, stormwater management, oil containment, and site utility services.
• Develop and approve project scopes, specifications, engineering designs, material orders, and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with substation engineering and design teams to ensure system additions, removals, and modifications support safe operation and maintenance.
• Review vendor submittals, construction drawings, and design documentation before release to contractors.
• Provide civil engineering support during construction, resolve field questions, and approve field-generated design changes.
• Perform root-cause analysis, develop corrective actions, and ensure compliance with company standards and applicable codes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited program.
• 3–5 years of civil or structural engineering experience, preferably in the electrical utility industry.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, RISA 3D/Foundation/Connection, and MathCAD.
• Valid driver’s license and availability for substation site visits, travel between MA/CT/NH, and emergency restoration assignments.

Nice to have

• Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) license.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Experience with AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, L-Pile, PLS Tower, TNX Tower, Retain Pro, or HydroCAD.
