Lead Engineer - Protection & Controls - Major Projects Group

Location: Remote/traveling for project sites, client offices, and utility offices; travel up to 25% of the time. Projects are located across the United States.

Salary: $121,680–$176,436 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and internal equity.

What you will do

• Develop and review protective relay settings, relay coordination studies, short-circuit analyses, fault current studies, and arc flash studies.
• Design protection schemes for generators, transformers, buses, feeders, breakers, transmission lines, and utility interconnections.
• Coordinate islanding detection, anti-islanding protection, ride-through settings, grounding analyses, and protection across synchronous and inverter-based resources.
• Integrate protection systems with SCADA, EMS, and RTU infrastructure using IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus.
• Prepare and review one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel layouts, and third-party engineering packages.
• Support relay testing, FAT/SAT, commissioning, energization planning, NERC PRC compliance, contract reviews, and project scope development.

Requirements

• 10+ years of progressive protection and controls engineering experience for high-voltage transmission, substations, or large-scale generation systems.
• Experience with relay settings and coordination studies for 13.8 kV–345 kV systems.
• Proficiency with ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, CAPE, EasyPower, or SKM Power Tools.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited college, or equivalent industry experience.
• Experience supporting renewable, gas, energy storage, or utility interconnection projects.
• Ability to travel up to 25% to project sites, client offices, and utility offices.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license.
• Knowledge of NERC PRC, IEEE, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E standards.
• Experience leading and mentoring engineers and developing protection and controls standards.
• Python or scripting experience for engineering automation.
