R&D Engineer 3 (Electrical Design)

What you will do

• Coordinate the design of electrical systems for microgrids and data centers.
• Establish and review project requirements, develop project schedules, and coordinate implementation.
• Create and review one-line diagrams, equipment requirement specifications, functional specifications, system design descriptions, engineering studies, reports, ITAAC, and associated calculations.
• Perform interdisciplinary reviews and accept subcontractor work products.
• Make technical decisions ensuring compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, RTO, and ISO requirements.
• Coordinate and oversee designated subcontractors while reporting to the Computational Innovation Manager in the Office of Technology group.

Requirements

• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• At least 5 years of experience in the commercial power industry focused on design or systems engineering.
• Eligibility to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
• Knowledge of electric power distribution, load following, dynamic data center power demand, and energy storage.
• Knowledge of Grid-Forming Control, Grid-Following Control, and EPMS.
• Experience using ETAP for microgrid power system analysis, distribution network analysis, load flow, short-circuit, protective relaying, and coordination analysis.
• Experience with I&C systems for steam generation, steam valves, safety systems, and closed-loop SCADA-controlled systems applied to turbo-machinery and industrial processes.
• Ability to support cross-functional teams across engineering, operations, maintenance, and planning; communicate clearly; solve problems independently; plan and organize work; adapt to change; and build effective working relationships.
• Ability to understand and implement quality assurance regulations, standards, and guidelines including 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, 10 CFR 21, and NQA-1, and to travel nationally and locally.

Nice to have

• Emphasis in power systems analysis.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license registration and/or an advanced degree.
• Experience supporting cross-functional teams, participating in industry standards associations or working groups, and demonstrating project management skills.
