Tech Lead, Simulation Engine (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Remote in the United States; based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Moderate travel required, 11–25%.

Salary: $189,000–$272,000 USD annually.

What you will do

• Architect and maintain the core autonomous vehicle simulation engine and its adapter layer for autonomy middleware integration.
• Lead development of ego-vehicle dynamics, multi-body physics models, rendering, and sensor-simulation pipelines.
• Own the mathematical logic and backend execution framework for unified simulation evaluation metrics.
• Set technical direction and maintain determinism and performance across the simulation stack.
• Lead design and code reviews, collaborate with the Hardware-in-the-Loop team, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience focused on simulation, robotics, or physics-based systems.
• Expert-level proficiency in modern C++ and Python for large-scale, performance-critical software.
• Strong software architecture experience with modular simulation or robotics systems and deterministic, reproducible environments.
• Experience with simulation loop design, vehicle dynamics, robotics middleware, or external simulation engines.
• Prior experience leading and mentoring engineering teams.
• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.

Nice to have

• Experience with autonomous vehicles or advanced robotics.
• High-fidelity rendering, sensor-simulation pipelines, or Hardware-in-the-Loop testing experience.
• Experience integrating ML into simulation, including data-driven traffic agents or scene reconstruction.
• Knowledge of deterministic and real-time computing.
