Staff Systems Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

TL;DR

Staff Systems Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles): Design, integrate, and validate new capabilities for an autonomous public transit network with an accent on safety functions, on-track testing, and system-level requirements. Focus on building integration scenarios, analyzing logs and metrics, driving root-cause resolution, and coordinating release readiness across vehicles, wayside systems, dispatch, autonomy, and operations.

Location: Remote may be considered, although the preferred arrangement is on-site 3–4 days per week in Richmond, California. Hands-on work at the test track and project sites is required.

Salary: $200,000–$250,000 USD per year, plus stock options.

What you will do

• Own the integration and on-track landing of new GATN capabilities, including reduced headways, fail-operational behaviors, ATP functions, ticket kiosk flows, and dispatch behaviors.
• Design and execute Tier 2+ integration scenarios covering safety functions, throughput, and operational workflows across vehicles, wayside systems, and dispatch/OCC.
• Improve regression and mileage-accumulation test suites, including test selection, ordering, and coverage criteria.
• Assess safety-function health using logs, metrics, and track behavior, and recommend parameter or design changes.
• Drive release readiness, coordinate multi-vehicle and multi-site integration, and establish testing and go-live criteria.
• Lead technical triage, root-cause analysis, requirements traceability, and improvements to test infrastructure, logging, metrics, and configuration management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
• 4–10+ years of experience in a relevant industry, including at least 1 year in systems integration and test, system test, or verification and validation for complex hardware/software systems.
• Experience planning and executing systems-level integration test campaigns with scenario design, success criteria, and analysis.
• Strong root-cause analysis skills across software and hardware interfaces.
• Ability to collaborate across autonomy, embedded, systems, operations, and product teams and drive alignment without direct authority.
• Comfort working hands-on at the test track and project sites.

Nice to have

• Experience with autonomous vehicles, robotics, transit systems, or complex integrated hardware/software products.
• Familiarity with HIL, SIL, and simulation frameworks.
• Experience with Jama, SysML, DOORS, or similar systems engineering tools.
• Experience delivering safety-critical products and working with safety, reliability, operational envelopes, availability metrics, or RAMS.
• Master’s degree in Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering.
