Software Engineer II, Data Solutions (AI)

Location: Chicago, Illinois; compensation information also references New York and San Francisco.

Salary: $85,000–$130,000 annually in Illinois; $100,000–$145,000 annually in New York and San Francisco.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain the cloud-native Edge Data Platform.
• Build data platform systems that enable secure connections between Tempus’s cloud, healthcare organizations, and data networks.
• Support efficient and reliable exchange of clinical, molecular, and imaging datasets.
• Define data contracts and write specifications for REST APIs, preferably in Python.
• Build and operate scalable, resilient data pipelines and microservices in production.
• Collaborate with data integration teams and colleagues from different technical and professional backgrounds in an agile environment.

Requirements

• Experience writing data contracts and REST API specifications, preferably using Python.
• Experience with frontend development using React and JavaScript, or a strong interest in developing this skill.
• Experience with cloud-native applications, AWS or GCP services, container orchestration, CI/CD, event-based integration patterns, and microservices.
• Experience building and operating scalable, resilient data pipelines and production microservices.
• Ability to iterate quickly in agile environments and communicate with colleagues across different fields.
• Experience using GenAI tools in day-to-day software engineering work.

Nice to have

• Healthcare domain knowledge and experience with FHIR, HL7, ANSI X12, or OMOP.
• Experience integrating with Electronic Medical Record systems.
• Experience with high-throughput data processing systems and spiky workloads.
• Knowledge of networking, Linux system administration, and cloud identity federation such as OIDC.
