Datastore Forward Deployed Engineer (PostgreSQL/GraphQL)

Location: Boston, MA / Remote

Salary: $150,000–$170,000 per year, plus equity, PTO, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Work directly with external partners to understand data needs, analytical workflows, and technical constraints.
• Design, build, and ship application features, integration tooling, and proof-of-concept solutions on Beacon’s platform and partner platforms.
• Guide partner integrations with Beacon’s PostgreSQL-backed GraphQL API and support effective data access patterns.
• Collaborate with Datastore engineers, product managers, and scientific teams to improve data models, APIs, documentation, and integration capabilities.
• Develop internal tools, services, and queries for observability, troubleshooting, and client issue resolution.
• Debug production data issues end to end through logs, pipelines, and databases to identify root causes and implement fixes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in backend software engineering, data engineering, or data platform engineering, including hands-on application development.
• 3+ years in a customer-facing technical role delivering solutions to external partners or clients.
• Strong SQL skills and production PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query tuning, and query plans.
• Experience designing and maintaining operational data models and solving data-related problems with external stakeholders.
• Proficiency in Python and/or Julia, with the ability to work across data querying, modeling, application development, and integration code.
• Experience building and consuming APIs, especially GraphQL, plus familiarity with REST, batch exports, ELT/ETL, and event-sourcing patterns.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare, life sciences, or regulated data environments.
• Experience querying Snowflake and building dashboards with Superset.
• Experience with Julia; the Datastore stack also includes SQL and TypeScript.
