TL;DR
Embedded Firmware Engineer (Robotics): Building firmware for humanoid robot hardware subsystems, including charger control, battery management, distributed communication, and actuator systems with an accent on power conversion, safety, and real-time embedded execution. Focus on implementing control loops, diagnosing firmware-hardware failures, and designing fault detection and safe-state transitions for production robotic platforms.

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; on-site

Salary: $200,000–$280,000 per year plus equity

Company

hirify.global builds humanoid robots designed to move, learn, and operate safely in homes and other real-world environments.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain charger firmware for AC-DC power conversion, power factor correction, and isolated DC-DC conversion.
  • Implement lithium-ion battery charge profiles, including constant-current, constant-voltage, and taper phases.
  • Design charger-to-BMS communication over CAN and coordinate charge requests, feedback, temperature limits, and fault signaling.
  • Implement voltage and current regulation, soft-start sequencing, and protection logic for power converters.
  • Develop fault detection and safe-state transitions for overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature, ground faults, and BMS communication loss.
  • Test, validate, and verify firmware releases across prototype and production robot platforms.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of embedded firmware development in C/C++ on real hardware; 7+ years for senior or staff-level positions.
  • Experience with interrupts, DMA, timing-critical execution, and embedded communication protocols.
  • Working knowledge of switched-mode power supplies, AC-DC topologies, power factor correction, transformer isolation, and converter control.
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion charging protocols, including CC-CV and multi-stage charging.
  • Hands-on CAN experience plus SPI, I²C, and UART interfaces.
  • Experience debugging firmware and hardware with oscilloscopes, current probes, and power analyzers.

Nice to have

  • Experience with safety-critical or fault-tolerant embedded systems and standards such as IEC 61508 or ISO 26262.
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS, SafeRTOS, or similar real-time operating systems.
  • Background in robotics, autonomous systems, or complex electromechanical products.
  • Experience with distributed real-time communication, motor drive and actuator control, or battery charge management.

Culture & Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • FSA and HSA options, commuter benefits, disability coverage, life insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program.
  • On-site snacks and catered lunches.
