TL;DR
Thermal Design Engineer (Aerospace): Leading thermal design, heat transfer, and secondary flow engineering for advanced gas turbine systems with an accent on thermo-mechanical assessment, thermal modelling, and turbomachinery component optimisation. Focus on solving complex thermal performance and durability challenges, leading technical investigations, and delivering engineering solutions across the product lifecycle.

Location: Derby, United Kingdom; hybrid onsite work. The role may require security clearance and completion of Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.

What you will do

  • Lead heat transfer, thermal analysis, and secondary flow design activities for gas turbine components.
  • Develop and improve thermal analysis methodologies and models across conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design phases.
  • Perform thermal and thermo-mechanical assessments of rotating and stationary turbomachinery components and subsystems.
  • Interpret thermal performance data, lead root cause investigations, and recommend design improvements for component durability.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, aerodynamic, performance, and design engineering teams on integrated engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, support customer engagement, and contribute to project delivery, recruitment, and business development.

Requirements

  • 2–6 years of experience in thermal analysis and design for gas turbine engines or turbomachinery.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
  • Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, thermal management systems, and secondary flow systems.
  • Experience with thermo-mechanical analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Experience supporting products through development, validation, and in-service support.
  • Ability to lead complex technical investigations, communicate with stakeholders, and provide technical guidance within multidisciplinary teams.

Nice to have

  • Experience with SC03, SK22, SPAN, or equivalent thermal analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of aero engines, turbine cooling systems, secondary air systems, and thermal protection methodologies.
  • Experience with non-conformance assessments, technical variations, concessions, customer-facing activities, and technical reviews.
  • Background in engineering consultancy, an OEM, or aerospace propulsion programmes.
