TL;DR
Sr. Perception & Sensors Engineer, Robotics Hardware (Robotics Sensors): Designing, integrating, calibrating, and validating LiDAR, depth camera, IMU, GPS, and other sensing systems for field-ready autonomous robots with an accent on spatial accuracy, time synchronization, and environmental performance. Focus on building sensor architectures, solving hardware-software integration issues, and characterizing and monitoring sensor systems from prototype through production and deployment.

Location: Irvine, California, United States. The role is currently on-site; hybrid or remote work may be explored.

Salary: $70,000–$300,000 annual base pay, depending on location, experience, knowledge, and skills.

Company

hirify.global develops risk-aware, reliable, field-ready AI systems and foundational models for autonomous robots operating in complex, unstructured environments.

What you will do

  • Define sensor requirements and architectures for LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, GPS, ToF sensors, and related devices.
  • Integrate sensors with electrical, mechanical, and software systems, including USB, Ethernet, I2C, CAN, GMSL, ROS nodes, and sensor drivers.
  • Design and validate spatial and temporal performance, including coverage, resolution, coordinate transforms, timestamping, synchronization, triggering, and latency.
  • Characterize sensor behavior under vibration, lighting, moisture, and temperature conditions, and optimize exposure, gain, filtering, and frame-rate settings.
  • Design and execute intrinsic, extrinsic, and temporal calibration procedures, including alignment rigs and calibration boards.
  • Support procurement, production, QA, field deployment, root-cause debugging, and monitoring of sensor health, data quality, and calibration status.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with perception sensors such as LiDAR, depth cameras, IMUs, or GPS.
  • Experience collaborating across electrical, mechanical, and software engineering teams.
  • Strong foundations in optics, signal processing, and electromagnetic wave propagation, with practical laboratory testing and debugging skills.
  • Experience with ROS or ROS2, sensor drivers, coordinate transforms, timing protocols such as PTP or NTP, timestamping, synchronization, triggering, and latency constraints.
  • Experience with sensor calibration, characterization, and high-fidelity simulation tools such as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or RViz.

Nice to have

  • Experience scaling systems from prototype to large-scale production.
  • Experience developing robotics systems for harsh field environments or deployed autonomous vehicles, drones, or ruggedized robots.
  • Fluency across software, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of robotics autonomy stacks and the effects of sensor performance on autonomy algorithms.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on autonomous robotics systems deployed in real-world environments.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary hardware and autonomy team focused on reliability, scalability, and field performance.
  • Join a close-knit, fast-moving engineering organization with a decade-long track record of field deployments.
  • Inclusive workplace committed to evaluating candidates and employees based on merit, qualifications, and performance.
