Sr. Manager (Associate Director) of Project and Portfolio Management

Location: South San Francisco, CA, United States; hybrid work with three days per week in the office for local candidates, or remote work with travel to headquarters as needed.

Salary: $164,000–$204,000 per year for successful US-based applicants, plus annual performance bonus and equity incentive plan eligibility.

What you will do

• Partner with project team leaders to develop appropriately scaled project strategies and high-performing team environments.
• Develop and execute integrated project plans spanning research, discovery, clinical development, software engineering, and data science/machine learning.
• Lead cross-functional matrix teams, meetings, decision-making, project scope, deliverables, risks, and resources.
• Drive execution while balancing speed, quality, and cost through critical path analysis and scenario planning.
• Analyze and summarize complex information for senior leaders and broader stakeholder communication.
• Establish and improve project management tools and methodologies across the portfolio.

Requirements

• BS degree in a life science field required; MS or PhD preferred.
• At least 5 years of biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience in early development, or 8 years for the Associate Director level.
• At least 2 years of project or portfolio leadership experience, or 5 years for the Associate Director level, leading cross-functional matrix teams.
• Extensive knowledge of drug development processes, including translational stages, target discovery, early commercial assessment, and preliminary clinical development.
• Strong project management, strategic analysis, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with high-content human data modalities, biomedical and clinical informatics, statistical genetics, medical genetics, and data generation technologies.

Nice to have

• Project management certification such as PMP or equivalent.
• Experience with Google Workspace and Smartsheet.
• Experience using generative AI tools or LLM technologies in daily work.
• Passion for machine learning-enabled drug discovery.
